Angels in the City of Man

I just watched the movie Michael yesterday and something was bothering me the whole time I was watching it. Besides the fact that Iím not really a fan of John Travolta. And ignoring the absurdity of bringing a dog back to life after having left dead and buried the old woman with whom heíd lived.

It was his attachment to earth which bothered me.

I was thinking about it and there are several movies with this idea: Michael, Wings of Desire, City of AngelsÖWhy are angels so often portrayed in the movies as wanting to stay on earth? Arenít angels superior beings to we humans, and arenít we humans told to avoid becoming attached to the earth? If we give our own vices to superior beings, are we degrading angels or elevating ourselves? Are we just trying to make ourselves feel better and justify our own attachment to the earth?

To me, portraying angels with no desire to return to heaven seems to suggest a rather bleak future for us: if angels donít want to stay in heaven, how could we?
